Positive: My experience at La Devinière was outstanding, and I was very sorry to have to leave. The guesthouse is charming and Monsieur Carérre makes every guest feel immediately at home. Guests are free to come and go as they please and have access to most of the building, including the kitchen; breakfast is served in the lovely back garden, or in the dining or living room in case of rain. Guests often take advantage of the couches to relax and read, and numerous books in French are available--including two of the owner-author's travel guides to parts of France. Impromptu conversations are common and frequently accompanied by wine. Rooms are furnished with traditional French/Basque furniture, framed art, and antiques so one feels, again, as though one is a guest in a delightful home rather than a hotel. Shelves throughout the building are full of mementos from M. Carérre's family; art and old books abound. Bathrooms are well equipped and lighting is good. There are several shops in the area, and many guests enjoyed shopping in them, and swimmers don't have far to walk to enjoy the beach. There is an elevator for anyone with mobility problems or guests who arrive "home" weary from a day of exploring.
Negative: There was nothing about La Devinière I didn't like. Unfortunately, tendinitis in my foot sometimes made it difficult for me to walk to dinner since most of the desirable restaurants are farther down the beach closer to the center of town. Guests with mobility difficulties may want to keep that factor in mind, but taxis can be called if needed. Fortunately for me, there was a boulangerie right across the street that had good sandwiches I purchased when walking was problematic.
Summary: La Devinière is a home away from home; I miss it and hope to return.
