Escape to a high quality beach house retreat with great privacy and natural beauty. This location is only minutes away from popular lakeside communities of Saugatuck/Douglas and Holland, Michigan.
WESTWIND is a hybrid/timberframe design, located directly on private Lake Michigan beachfront. Designed by one of Michigan's premier architectural firms and constructed in 2013 by one of Michigan's premier custom builders. It's design combines great detail and careful craftsmanship. We tried to use only the finest natural materials in this build, sourced locally when possible. One exception is the timberframe construction itself, which was first put together by Vermont Timberframe using Douglas Fir from the Northwest. Interior finishes, colors, and lighting were designer - facilitated. The home takes full advantage of its location, offering wonderful Lake Michigan views from nearly every room. It is lower than the surrounding wooded dunes, giving it great privacy and a cozy feel. Not to mention fewer steps to the beach! Despite the secluded feel of the property, it is less than ten minutes away from the shops, galleries and restaurants of Saugatuck/Douglas and Holland.
The south property line abuts the north boundary of Saugatuck Dunes State Park, featuring 41 miles of hiking trails interlacing 1000 undeveloped acres. The eastern border of the property meets with designated forest preserve. To the immediate west, 100' of private Lake Michigan beach. To the north, two other beach homes. As you descend the thirty user-friendly steps to the beachfront, you will see to your north a smattering of well - maintained lakefront homes. 4 miles further northward, conditions permitting, you can make out 'Big Red', the iconic lighthouse overlooking Holland's Lake Michigan channel. To the south you will see only forested, unspoiled, natural bluff, rolling sawgrass-covered dune, and some of the world's finest beach meeting the water. This stretches 4 miles to the south, where the Saugatuck channel pierhead is visible.
WESTWIND's main level great room offers a stunning view of Lake Michigan as you enter the front door. Douglas fir timbers apex to a 30 foot lofted ceiling. An oversized fieldstone fireplace is surrounded by comfortable seating with great views of the beach and Lake Michigan. French doors open to a sizeable wraparound deck. Part of the deck is encloseable by "Phantom Screens" which descend at the touch of a button to create a screened - in covered porch. Seating and dining in this area are provided by Ipe`- wood outdoor furniture. Beyond the deck is a short run of beachgrass followed by thirty low-rise steps descending to beach.
The home has four levels including a fourth - story crow's nest with balcony, and a walkout lower level. The goal of design was to eliminate trendiness and create a comfortable feel despite a large overall size. WESTWIND fits into it's setting naturally, with towering dunes on three sides, and Lake Michigan beachfront to the west.
The 1st master bedroom suite is located on the main floor and features beach and forest views, with french doors opening to it's own deck area. The 1st master offers a large walk-in closet and a king bed. The second master suite is immediately above the main, with an old-fashioned metal queen bed and french doors opening to a private balcony, directly overlooking Lake Michigan to the west, and forested dune to the south. Both master suites offer quality appointments, heated bathroom floors and private commode rooms. All cabinetry and millwork throughout WESTWIND is custom-designed and built by the superb local West-Michigan craftsmen.
On the walkout lower level are two additional bedroom ensuites, also with heated floors. Each of these four bedrooms have full views of Lake Michigan. One of the lower level suites is fitted with a queen bed, the other with a twin-over-full bunk bed with pull-out trundle. These two lower-level suites flank the "Lake Room" which features exposed timber frame and a full lakefront view. High-end AV equipment with projection screen, eleven foot ceiling, it's own oversized fireplace, and french doors open from this space to the Lake. The south side of this level features a beach entrance with beach toys, mats, and towels at the ready. A heated outdoor body/foot shower is located on the small patio outside the beach entrance.
Lower level flooring is composed of imported Indian slate. All other levels feature rugged reclaimed oak flooring. On the level above the main, a cat - walk overlooks the great room below. To the south on this second level is the 2nd master. The north portion of this floor houses a library finished in walnut, a five-foot circular north window, and a helical stair rising to the fourth-level crow's nest. The library is stocked with reading material, it's own remote controlled sound system, and a comfortable window seat positioned to take in the Lake view. The crow's nest offers addutional spectacular lake views and it's own fourth-floor balcony.
The library love seat opens to a full bed, converting the library-loft into a special sleeping suite, replete with it's own luggage and hanging closet, and it's own full bath.
A large, over-garage loft features rustic wide - plank oak flooring, exposed beams and knotty pine siding. The room features a massive oak bed and ensuite full bath with quality appointments consistent with the rest of the home.
Westwind's main floor kitchen opens to the great room in one direction and the dining room in the other. The kitchen is at once cozy, open, stylish, and a world-class culinary venue. The kitchen centerpiece is a 59" La Cornue Chateau 150 range, custom-ordered and hand - built in France. It is dressed in burgandy with stainless and brass trim, six high - capacity gas burners , two French dome ovens, and matching oversized Monsoon hood. The three kitchen sinks include a porcelain Herbeau French Farmhouse main sink and a porcelain prep sink by La Cornue. An additional polished stainless prep sink is located at the dedicated coffee/espresso bar. The kitchen's island easily accommodates 4-5 eaters. The kitchen's breakfast nook seats 4. The contiguous dining room table seats 8. An additional eating area is located on the west deck, which encloses via Phantom Screen at the push of a button. A peninsula between the kitchen and dining room houses a popup TV.
Cellular coverage at WESTWIND is nearly nonexistant, but cellphones do work on premesis, indoors and out with wi-fi calling enabled. High speed cable internet access is distributed throughought by a stable wi-fi system.
An elevator services the home's three primary levels (not the crow's nest).
The main laundry area is fitted with an over-sized porcelain sink, built-in ironing board and folding area. A second laundry area is located off the lower-level beach entrance.
Ample parking is on hand with a three - stall garage plus large outdoor parking area.
Bedding, bath towels, and beach towels and mats are provided. Folding beach chairs and umbrellas are ready for beach use.
