Surroundings
This region has a glorious past and a varied landscape. From the Mediterranean Sea with its beautiful sandy beaches, there is first fairly flat land with some inland lakes such as the 'Etang du Thau' and the 'Etang du Vic'. Along the coast are some hills with towns that have a history from far before the beginning of the era such as: Sète, Agde, Pezenas, Beziers. Further inland are the extensive vineyards. Even further north, the landscape becomes really hilly. Limestone subsoil alternates with slate and red bauxite soil at the 'Lac du Salagou'. Wine is grown on lime and slate, it is a wonderful sight, vines that stand between the boulders and yet bear fruit. In the limestone, rivers carved beds that sometimes have enormous dimensions, such as at the 'Cirque de Navacelles' and in the' Gorges d 'Héric' and at Minerve and the dried-up part at Mourèze. Rivers locally disappear underground, creating caves. The Clamouse stalactite caves are the best known and are among the most beautiful in France. In the hinterland are also the reservoirs and these are of course also suitable for water sports. Remains from the 6th century BC have been found in the 'Oppidium of Ensérune'. A hill with excavations can be visited there. Agde has vestiges from the time when it was traded with the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Beziers there are 9 locks in a row: 'Les Neuf Ecluses' also an attraction. For lovers of modern architecture, a visit to Montpellier is mandatory: architect Bofill has built a whole new neighborhood in a style that combines concrete with ancient Greek columns.
