The village of Agios Ioannis Kamenos belongs to the municipality of Agios Vasilios. It is located in the south of Rethymno, about 25 kilometers from the city and 7 kilometers from the area of Plakias. On its northern side, it borders the small forest of Ai-Yiannis, while on the south it borders the village of Kanevos. Furthermore, it is only 600 meters from the Kotsifos Gorge.
Some sources think it was founded during the Middle Byzantine period (867-1025 AD). Certainly, over the centuries its residential and population activity changed often.
The current image of the village is shaped by traditional houses (restored and not) dating from the beginning of the 19th century and later. Walking through its picturesque cobbled narrow streets you will encounter some 19th-century fountains, while you will certainly notice the architectural choice of the arch in almost all of its houses. There is also a traditional laundry and an old-style oil press.
The altitude is about 450 meters, while the climate during the spring and summer months is mild (without very high temperatures). The fact that the village borders the forest (which also has a small stream that flows until spring and maybe early in the summer) allows for the moderation of the high summer temperatures, which makes the place ideal for those who cannot stand the stifling heat (a common phenomenon in Crete, especially in the urban centers). The population of the village fluctuates strongly depending on the season.
In the summer many houses come alive as many families choose the village to spend their holidays. Of course, some come from spring to the end of summer to enjoy the "South" of Rethymnon. The beaches of southern Rethymno are unique and the location allows you to visit many and different ones without having to drive far. Indicative: The beaches of Souda, Fotinari, Plakias, Damnoni, Ammoudi, Schinaria, and Kalypso are approximately 15-20 minutes (~9km) away. At a slightly greater distance, there is the beach of Preveli Monastery with the well-known palm forest, and at about the same distance, but to the west this time, are the beautiful beaches of the village of Rodakino. In general, in the summer the activities in the village and the surrounding villages are intensified with the organization of many festive events honoring the traditions of the years. Certainly choosing a traditional tavern with live music is an easy task from spring to early autumn.
In the winter few are permanent residents in the village. Mainly those engaged in agricultural and livestock activities. The tranquility of the village combined with the sounds of nature that you hear constantly, at this time of year is a unique experience. The locals are always friendly with a smile and a chat. During the winter season, there is no intense activity as in general in the area, but you will always find the coffee shop/convenience store of Iliomanonis in Kanevo (family business 500 meters from Koumaro) open, where you can get your coffee, various local products, small appetizers (depending on appetite) basic necessities, but also a lot of information about the area and the paths of the Mountain and the forest.
The combination of the forest and the traditional settlement allow you to enjoy countless short and longer walks that start the moment you step out of your door.
