If you walk over the bridge at the Lock and turn right you can walk to Kingston Upon Thames in around 20 minutes ( a very pretty walk) and if you turn left you can walk to Richmond Upon Thames (beautiful and very worth the effort). Please also check out the exquisite Petersham Nurseries, possibly the most beautiful garden centre in the UK and it also serves very special (rather pricey lunches) - but you have to book in advance. To make it more special, you could drive to St Margarets (Twickenham) and get the tiny ferry / boat across to Petersham. It is such a treat and lovely for children.
